I appreciated Jack's remarks about hours of NPO being torture for an 8 month
old. That's what I thought when Judy Eastburn ran the question by me.
However, what threw me, and what I hope some of the docs will address, is
there any reason for a fast of this length that arises specifically from the
nature of the upper and lower GI tests being performed? As Judy explained
it to me, they are looking for blockages or bowel rotation, disease, etc.
If the bowel has to be completely empty of any material in order for the
tests to show what they need to see, does the fast then become necessary?
It still seems to me (logically) that given the rapid gut transit time of
breastmilk, that a shorter fast would be ok. But I honestly don't know
about these tests, and hope the docs will comment.
