I am wondering what others recommend to moms whose newborn babies are
having a frenotomy. Some babies do not seem to be bothered much and some seem
to have a lot of pain after the procedure and during the stretches and
sweeps to prevent reattachment.

Hello all,

What a timely question. I just happened to see a 10 day old, a few days
post-release, today. On the bulletin board in the apartment was the sheet from
the ENT. On it were two kinds of stretches, as options. Mom said the
doctor told her to sweep under the tongue rather than do the lifts ( one with
index fingers under the tongue and pushing or pulling, the other with a
tongue depressor above the site and then pulling down the jaw and pushing back
on the tongue). I have a feeling that the docs who only release anteriors,
don't worry too much about re-attachment. This doc does a lot of posteriors
which is why she put this instruction sheet together. I also noticed she
said if baby seemed to need it, to give a dose of Motrin ( 1/4 tsp.). This is
usually helpful with upper labial releases and some posteriors, but may
not be as needed with the anteriors ( which this baby had, I showed mom
pictures and she immediately pointed to the Type 1.)

None of the other local MDs who do releases ( all anteriors) recommend any
of this.

Peace,
Judy
