Someone else already gave you some excellent citations related to the
protective aspects of mom's milk.

My suggestion is more practical: Why does mother's position, lying down or
sitting up, have anything to do with baby's potential ear infections? Isn't
the newborn almost always "lying down" when he is at breast? Sometimes we
put baby almost upright sitting on mom's lap while nursing. Sometimes a
baby in the football hold is almost upright if mom's nipple points straight
out, but is definitely lying down if mom's nipple naturally points to the
floor. Does the doctor insist that all mothers, whether BFing or FFing,
always sit baby upright on her lap for all feeds?

> Greetings! I'm wanting to respond to an article that was recently
published in our local newspaper. Although the primary focus of the piece
was on cosleeping, there was a comment in the article that mothers
shouldn't nurse their babies lying down because it can "cause milk to pool
in the child's nose and throat and lead to ear infections." I have always
thought that the milk can go up the eustacian tube into the inner ear,
however the antibodies in the milk can prevent and possibly even fight an
infection. However a baby receiving ABM in a bottle could be at risk for
ear infection. Before I respond, I would appreciate any direction
regarding studies on this topic that either support or deny this thinking.
Much appreciated, thanks in advance.
