I think I have been misunderstood.  Of course there should not be wholesale 
shipments of formula to disaster areas for all the reasons stated.
This should not be an opportunity for producers of formula or accessories, 
bottles etc. to advertise themselves.  And we have to think of what happens 
after the donations stop and the parents do not have the means to continue 
purchasing the quantities needed - or the water is not clean and 
contaminated water is used to mix the formula.

My comment was about orphaned babies who were rescued dehydrated and 
malnourished.  Who is going to breastfeed them?

I do truly understand the message that has been going out on Lactnet and in 
normal circumstances am totally against donations of formula.

A local charity, a food-bank, call me periodically to ask for a donation. 
The sales patter is based on "all the babies who have nothing to eat."
These babies are not orphaned but their families are poor. So there is no 
reason that these babies are not breastfed - every parent in Israel has 
access to free well-baby clinics.
I have protested over the telephone and by letters that while I am prepared 
to volunteer my time and to organize a rota of volunteers to help women in 
need to breastfeed, I am not prepared to donate money for formula, 
especially as their leaflets have huge logos advertising a specific company.
