I wish more profs were like Rob and suggested relactating to mothers with
problems. The mothers can always say 'no' and some might say 'yes', not
having realised it was possible.

In the UK SNS are available, but rarely used. As Mike Woolridge says,
they are not something that UK mothers (or professionals) would feel happy
using, though when it's appropriate I sometimes raise the idea with a
mother. I have no direct experience with one at all - in nearly 20 years
no one in my direct experience has used one. So when mothers relactate, the
usual way is to just to put the baby to the breast as soon and as often as
possible, with formula being wound down gradually as the supply returns.
Expressing may also be done, depending on circumstances.

In Rob's mother's case, she would, I think, benefit from also giving the
baby as much time skin to skin with her, so the baby could have plenty of
chances to latch on without the SNS, and so she could respond immediately
to the baby's feeding cues. 8 times a day at the breast (with or without
the SNS) is unlikely to be enough to maintain a milk supply or satisfy the
baby's needs. Feeding needs to be ad lib, not scheduled, and every short
time at the breast is important. With plenty of stimulation, the milk
supply should come back pretty soon.

Expressing may be okay, but not instead of having the baby at the breast.
