Hi everyone,

I have reached a brick wall with a lady I have been councelling now
for four months,I really feel desparate and I am worried I and others
have missed something.
So---This lady first rang me after a prenatal class I took. She had had
breast reduction surgery and wanted to know if she could feed.
She read all the information I could give her and was very committed.
When she delivered (normal vaginal delivery.no meds) she had
enormous problems getting baby attatched. She didn"t ring me so
I couln"t help.Wnen she was discharged on day 5,baby had never
fed from her without a nippleshield. She rang me the next week home
when she hired a breastpump. When I visited her the baby would not attatch
but loved the shield. She had a good supply baby had lots of wet nappies
but she was very distressed.I encouraged her to keep going with the shield.
Breast milk with a shield was better than the alternative!
Weeks went by,-baby very colicky gained adequate amounts.Sceams at breast
often refuses to feed.Mum has checked her diet etc.Week five baby dianosed
with U.T.I. and treated with antibiotics.-Baby reacted to them and colick
worsens, has chronic loose acid stools.Baby lost weight, but mum was told to keep
the baby on meds because he could have kidney reflux. He was investgated
3 weeks later,-all clear, but now Mum was a screaming mess and very depressed.
We got her supply back, and offered the supps of ebm with a bottle( Her choise)
She visited a clinic here for postnatal depression and one of staff got the baby
on breast without the shield(he's now15 weeks old)Weight started to increase
by the day.I thought GREAT! But -5 days later the baby woke one morning
and toally refused to feed.Mum tried the shield-no way-that evening she offered
the bottle(still ebm) and he gulped 200mls.He now srceams even if he sees
her breast-even drowsy.Sreamed in the bath with her-real aversion. She is still
expressing all his needs-this week he had a gain of 200gms in 3 days.-At
seveteen weeks this baby is very alert.
I feel that this refusal has been brewing for a while-but i'm stumped!
   Has anyone any ideas?
Sorry to be so long winded.but I thought the whole picture might help.T.I.A.
