<She brought with her to the hospital a "Niplet" which she purchased in
Australia. It's been years since I've seen one of these. It's shaped like
a small bicycle pump and fits over the nipple only - mom gives it a
squeeze, and viola!, a nipple appears. It got me to thinking, why aren't
these in more widespread use as the circumstances dictate. It's very
simple to use and inexpensive.>

When last I heard about the commercial product named 'Nipplet", it was
very expensive, and had been developed (in Europe, I believe) for use in
non-pregnant, non-lactating women with inverted nipples, and because of
possible liability issues, I believe I read something to the effect that
that company was recommending it only in that situation.

However, since the patient had bought it in Australia, it makes me wonder
if what she had was a product made in Japan by a company named Pigeon. I
don't believe this product had the name Niplete. The one I am describing
reminded me of a tiny replica of the old-fashioned "bicycle horn" breast
pumps. It has a small bell that fits over the nipple, is about 2 inches
high, not counting the small bulb about the size of a golf ball, or
smaller, to produce the vacuum. The last time I ordered these from a
supplier in Toronto, they were less than $5 apiece, and I, too, wondered
why they haven't taken the market in the USA by storm, given the
frequency of nipple retraction in mothers who have been overhydrated
and/or received large doses of pitocin. I believe Carla D'Anna was the
name of the person who put me in touch with the supplier. His link is
lost in a recent computer glitch I had, but I believe it is Galtak or
something like that.
