Again I am behind, so sorry if this has already been said.
IMHO yes, urine output is the best measurement of hydration, but it
doesn't show if there is sufficient CALORIE intake. It's the old
foremilk/hindmilk thing. If baby is getting lots of foremilk, but
insufficient hindmilk, then there would probably be "plenty" of
voids, but short on the stools. In talking with new parents about
output as an indicator of sufficient intake, I usually simplify it
to: "In the first weks, wet diapers tell us if baby is getting
enough volume while dirty diapers tell us if baby is getting enough
calories." I know that may be over simplified, but I think it gives
enough for the average new parent to comprehend.
