Met with the neonatologist who is our medical director today. He stated that
breast milk of preterm infants is too low in protein. That breast milk
protein content decreases from 2.2 to 1.8 after about 4 weeks of pumping and
that this was inadequate for pre-terms. Therefore, he uses milk fortifiers
after 4 weeks. My mouth dropped! Where does he get these ideas? I was
hurried out (another appointment waiting) without getting an answer. Does
anyone out there have any idea where this notion comes from? I'm sure
Bristol-Meyers is delighted to publish it in glossy format, if it's out
there. I need help here.

I will search lactnet for references, but if anyone knows offhand a good
rebuttal, please respond.

Second question: Are there any references out there for use/dosage of
fenugreek capsules? Any possible side effects? Would this be a problem for
pre-terms?

In reviewing updated policies with our neo, the biggest problem is: don't
decree anything, just suggest. God forbid that you should have any policies
with teeth or that you expect anyone to GO by policy or that health care
workers/pediatricians/nurses should be subject to any policies that they
don't each and every individual agree with into.

Thanks in advance for help! In the meantime, I'll try not to stroke out when
I'm talking to the ped that orders all moms to have formula just in case!
