Hope everyone going well.

Hoping that some one can give me some insight. Have been seeing a mum of a
6 month old. She has contracted giardia from the local water. Dr wants her
to hve Flagyl. We have rung the various medicine helplines here in
Australia and they all say this mum should express and throw out the
breastmilk while on the Antibiotics. The Dr is not willing to look at other
ABs. Are there any? Are there any treatments that this mum could have and
still allow her to continue breastfeeding?

The mum is taking Charcol and lactobacilius preparations from the chemist in
the hope to avoid the abs. She is finding though that she can eat every
other day and not experince the giardia symptoms. She is though getting
dizzy and IMHO really needs some form of treatment to kill the giardia. She
has been told that giardia will eventually leave her body. Does anyone know
the life cycle of giardia?

Her baby is fussing (and had been prior to the giardia) and she is concerned
that the baby may totally wean if given a bottle, is very concerned about
allergy etc induced by the formula or that the baby will refuse any fluids
(the baby has only just been introduced to solids and been totally
breastfeed). We live a tropical area that is hot and humid at the moment
(the weather is getting ready for the big summer wet).

Thanks all
