Catherine Watson Genna has suggested to check for
tongue tie, short jaw, and shallow latch. Sometimes sucking only becomes
painful as the baby develops more effective compensations for reduced
tongue mobility.
All good ideas. I would also have the baby checked for an ear infection. I have
several times seen babies start tearing up mom's nipples when it hurts too much to
move their jaw properly.
