I have a mom who has been offered a job working for a gasoline company. She will be in direct contact with diesel and gas fuel on a daily basis, and is wondering how much of this contaminant will go through her breastmilk and get to the baby.

My first response was that I didn't think this type of work was good for HER, let alone the baby. But I guess this is a high paying job, and she would like to do it anyway. Argh.

I know that the risk for contaminants effecting the milk are greater according to where one works. So is there any definitive answer for this mom?

Thanks,
Brenda Phipps, BS, IBCLC
