I've just joined and I've been browsing Lactnet for about a week and thought I'd
introduce myself and take a stab at responding to some of the items I've seen
lately.

I'm a LLLL in Northwest London, England where we have lived since 1987.
Married to Howard Feldman 14.5 years, 3 daughters, Rebecca = 9.5; Leah= 7 and
Kayla =1.5. I'm new to the internet and have also subscribed to LLLOL. I just
hope I am able to keep up with the post. We are American xpats (altho Leah and
Kayla were born in London). We love it here. Previously lived in Ft. Worth,
TX, UT at Austin, born in NY. Also travelled the world and lived in Israel 1.5
years (83-84). Any other UK internetters?

1. Re: Unusual tongue: I have suspected for some time that the cause of my
sore nipples which I experienced with my #1 and #3 babies was due to a tongue
problem. #2 baby had such a lovely, long tongue which extended well over her
gums and could easily be seen while nursing. However, though I can't remember
the tongue in #1, baby #3 definitely did something funny with her tongue which
caused me terrible soreness and pain for the first 4 weeks. This leads me to
believe that, whenever I have a mother with sore nipples and everything "looks
OK" from the outside, I still suspect that something must be wrong which I
cannot see. So - the question is - What to do? Nothing but time and
determination helped me and other mothers I have seen, to persevere until this
sore period passes (up to 12 weeks for one mom). Any ideas? I feel cheated out
of a perfect nursing relationship with my babies because of these problems for
which I found no solution even with all the help in the world at my fingertips.

2. Re: Beans/Gas/Food allergies etc: I seem to remember hearing or reading
that gaseous foods or any food at all for that matter, don't pass through milk
to baby, that this was a myth. What about people in India eating spicy curry or
Mexico eating spicy burritos and both those cultures eat lots of beans and
dairy. On the other hand I have heard that some food eaten during pregnancy can
cause problems for baby later. This is separate from bonifide food
intollerances/allergies. Comments, please?

3. Re: Judy Dunlap (Re; nipple stimulation) mentioned (23/11/95) oxytocin
continues to be released throughout feed, multiple times... without this
...breasts won't empty completely.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought the breasts are never completely empty.
If we lead mothers to think this then many will believe they don't have enough
milk to feed their babies. Carification please.

4. Re: Lecithin and salt added to diet with repeated plugged
ducts/mastitis. Please may I have dosage on this. This was one of my biggest
problems in feeding my 3 babies - repeated plugged ducts and recurrent mastitis,
with one spot in particular. Tried lecithin 2x1200 mg daily for a year to no
avail. Problems diminished after first year and only daily hand expressing and
massage kept ducts clear.

5. Re: National Breastfeeding MediaWatch, USA monitors attitudes toward
breastfeeding in the USA, such as ads which are bad for bf, like the CC company
sponsoring fight against hunger showing bottle feeding. Contact: Laurie Cocher

6. Re: Hormonal Contraception: Just a query: Do LCs discuss/recommend
methods of contraception to mothers?

7. Re: Reflux: I'd like more information please. A mom in my LLL group
is expecting baby#2 and is concerned about repeat performance.

8. New Question: Fibro-cystic breast disease and plugged ducts/mastitis:
Does anyone know of any relationship between incidence of plugged ducts or
recurrent mastitis and lumpy breasts? I have a theory and would like to collect
information, research or annectdotal to support this. My theory is, and this is
based purely on my own personal experience, having had the same problem bf all 3
babies: lumps in breast press on milk ducts which enlarge during pregnancy and
lactation. Flow may be restricted and cloggs form causing plugged ducts which
may lead to mastitis. In my case, while expressing milk, I observed these
cloggs which varied from small hard bits which stuck in the nipple openings to
stringy, slimy, curdles. Sometimes the milk was off colored (yellow or green
tinged) and salty to taste. Most have never seen this so I photographed it
once. (Weird?) I suffered for the first 12 to 18 months with each baby. With
baby #3 I took 2x1200mg lecitin caps daily with no improvement. Only massage
and hand expressing kept mastitis at bay this last time. Kayla is now 18 months
and I have not had cloggs in 2 or 3 months. I still check my breasts often, to
make sure no clogs. One spot in particular plagued me. I think since my milk
supply has decreased in past 6 months, since Kayla takes more solids and nurses
mainly to sleep or for comfort, that milk ducts reduce (opposite of enlarge?)
and therefore the lumps aren't clogging things up so much. Comments please.

Thank you for the space to comment. It's fascinating reading everything. I
just hope to be able to keep up with it. Thanking you all in advance for your
comments to my questions.
