Judy writes, "I am really in need of some reference articles that deal
with the risks of using bottle nipples as nipple shields."

I suggest you look for references about using bottle nipples as
pacifiers and/or homemade pacifiers.

New York State Department of Health Memorandum 86-65, Risk of Aspiration
of Infant Pacifiers :

Public Health Series: H-41
The literature has reported cases of deaths among infants from
aspiration of makeshift and commercially available pacifiers.
(Pediatrics, 77:369-370, 1986; Pediatrics 65:163-164, 1980; Pediatrics,
58: 853-855, 1976; Maryland State Medical Journal, 20:53-54, 1971).

In the cases reported, deaths were due to aspiration of 1) pacifiers
prepared from nipples which are intended to be attached to a feeding
bottle, or 2) commercially distributed pacifiers which are unsafe in
design.

The New York State Department of Health urges hospitals to discontinue
the practice of using makeshift, homemade pacifiers in the care of
infants..."
