I also have met mothers who did not want to short-change the
firt-born and therefore elected not to breastfeed the second.  One
mother who was tandem nursing and overwhelmed by the stress in her
life elected to wean the babe in arms as well as the toddler so that
he wouldn't have to witness the baby getting the breast.

My earlier born children loved to watch me breastfeed the latest
addition to the family and hear about how when they were babies they
were also fed in this wonderful way.  The youngest missed out on this
reliving and retelling of her baby-hood.  Perhaps because of this she
was most facinated with photo albums, an inanimate substitute for the
sight of a baby feeding, but without the warmth, smells and and
sounds.

Yes, there may be a bit of jealousy.  They need to be loved through
this.  Does the mother who does not breastfeed the second for fear of
offending the first delay giving the older child a bicycle because
the younger one is unable to ride?  Will they be expected to
celebrate birthdays and go through other milestones at the same time?

The child whose baby brother/sister is not breastfed may have a sibling
who demands even more attention because of illness and increased
crying, a mother who is spending time on formula and bottles, and a
family that has less money to spend on present wants or needs or
future security and savings.
