'Seeing is believing' is an old proverb. Seeing and believing led people to accept as facts the notion that the sun rotates around earth, that maggots originate from decaying flesh and mice from stored grains of wheat. In modern times seeing also means using microscopes, telescopes, physical laws, chemical analyses, etc. But what we see or perceive instrumentally: is it a fact, a reality?

'Science is built up with facts, as a house is with stones. But a collection of facts is no more science than a heap of stones is a house.’ Science is built upon observation, measurement, inference, verification and deduction.—Alexander Kohn

With emphasis on verification.—PLB
