I agree with Kathy. We had planned a home birth with my second child and
ended up going to the hospital. My son's head was crowning in the doorway of
the hospital.
The nurses wanted to put a monitor on me and I refused. He was already
"there." I pushed him out in 2 pushes. They also wanted to hook me up to an
IV. I told them to bring me some water instead. Insurance charged us for many
procedures and medicine we never used!
The nurses wanted to take my son for a bath and testing. I said he wasn't
leaving my room and he wasn't dirty. We went home within 4 hours of arrival.
The nurses could not believe I was not leaving the baby for 24 hours. My
doctor watched him breastfeed and said the baby was fine to go home. I did
have a nurse come to my house the next day to check him.
I saw one of the hospital nurses about 7 months after birth. She said I
influenced her so much that she gave birth (months after me) without any
interventions!
Obviously certain medical procedures are needed in some situations during or
after a birth. I do think that parents give up many of their rights because
they think they have to do everything the hospital says. It is a learning
experience with each birth!
