My husband, Bob, who is executive director of something-or-other at a
community hospital here in the Chicagoland area just, a month ago or so,
added "Administrator of the Continuing Care Center" to his job. One of the
units at the CCC was unused, and the powers that be decided to turn it into a
long term nursing home type unit (currently the units there are all short
term/rehab/post hospital sort of units.). This new decision has recently
been communicated to the staff. Apparently one of the nurses came to him
rather nervously and told him that one of the unused rooms on that floor had
been being used for employees who were breastfeeding, and was he going to
take that into consideration and find another room for them to use? He said
she really seemed a bit nervous about coming to him and asking him for this.
He chuckled, and told her that absolutely another room would be found for the
employees -- didn't know where yet, but he would personally see to it. She
looked quite relieved. Guess she didn't know what I do for a living! And I
guess she didn't know that Bob is one of the few male supervisors that would
tell his pregnant employees, "And you WILL be breastfeeding, of course."
