Because of my earlier post requesting information on the passing of
Ashley Montague which was mentioned by someone on Lactnet, I have
received a few questions regarding "who was Ashley Montague." Here is my
response, along with a link to Amazon's web page on one of the greats in
Anthropology this century.

Dr. Montague wrote several books in his career. Many of them taught us
to be more humane with our babies. "Touching" remains popular today and
is an explanation of the significance of human skin as it relates to the
development of our species. Dr. Montague also co-authored an explicative
on Circumcision and why it should not be a routine procedure.

Among his earlier works was "The Natural Superiority of Women" for which
he came under fire by feminists and conservatives alike. He held that,
when we look at the human species we should understand that what is
truely miraculous about us is to be seen in the female body. Thus, it is
not to our benefit as a species, for women to mold themselves into the
male societal model. That book appears to be out of print at this point.

A couple of other things that I didn't know were that Dr. Montague also
actively debated the practicalities of evolution vs. creationism. He
edited a copy of essays on the topic. He also wrote a book in response
to the popular "The Bell Curve" which claimed that IQ was racially
influenced. Dr. Montague believed no such thing and he refuted it.

Again if anyone knows any of the details of his passing...please do
alert us. Has his family designated a recipient for donations in his
honor? I have tried to do an obituary search on the web, but to no
avail.

Here is the web page for his books on Amazon:
