I'm going to repeat what I have said here before about this video - what
makes it very uncomfortable viewing for me is the fact that this shows the
intervention of preventing the mother helping her baby to attach....in real
life, with an unmedicated mother and baby, the nursing couple would come
together, helping each other to start that wonderful co-operative, mutually
empowering relationship that is breastfeeding.
It is a wonderful tribute to the new baby's skill and need for the breast
that he does manage to help himself, of course - but why ask him to? And
why ask the mother *not* to scoop him up in her arms, make eye contact,
talk to him lovingly, and position him on the breast...in her own time,
responding to the baby's cues, and her own instinctive urges?
