Several years ago, I was watching a television documentary on scents. Part focused on the
perfume industry, where people with a particularly keen sense of smell are hired to rate scents
using descriptive terms rather than numbers. The perfume expert explained that the only scent
that is consistently rated "sensual" is vanilla. Then then narrator said that vanilla occurs
naturally only in two substances: the vanilla bean and human breast milk. And further, than
vanilla-flavored ice cream is always the best seller.
Perhaps humans are programmed at the most basic level to seek out the scent?
