I read your article "When children don't wean" on your website. I felt the
piece was very biased toward premature weaning and that the reporter really
did not do the homework.

You may not be aware of the scientific research on the normal range of
breastfeeding for humans, which is YEARS, not months. You can find it in
Breastfeeding : Biocultural Perspectives by Dettwyler and Macadam. You
should also contact the Academy of BF Medicine (a physcian only org) and LLL
for their expert opinion of this topic. Breastfeeding toddlers is not wrong
or unacceptable, altho it is uncommon. Breastfeeding is recommended to AT
LEAST age one by AAP, to 2 years AND BEYOND by World Health Org. Comments
made at the AAP meeting when their 97 policy statement came out, were very
favorable towards longer bf.

From reading some of the comments on the message boards, many folks DO NOT
HAVE A CLUE about bf at all, much less bf an older baby or child. Finally, I
believe Peggy Robin really wanted to succeed at bf, I believe she started
out doing so. I wonder why she feels that bf an older child is done due to
some inability to "let go" in the mother. I cannot imagine where she would
get such an idea. Since I work in the field of lactation, I have met lots of
these moms and children, and this is not the case at all. I find just the
opposite to be true - mothers and fathers let go much, much too soon. It is
the rare and special mother who goes the extra mile and makes a real
committment to her child.
