Dear Janet Hoover and all,
In our inner-city St. Paul hospital, the patient satisfaction
surveys increased to 98% for the post partum area the year the lactation
support program began!!! It was a Big Deal for us to score so high and
Huge improvement over all the previous years. The lactation consultants
making a courtesy/teaching/assessment visit for all the breastfeeding
moms (about 62% of the pts.) was the biggest change in care delivery.
One of the high-up managers (nursing dept) made the decision to
"eat the cost" of the lactation program and include LC visits in the pp
package of care. (!!! :-O ) We get some insurance reimbursement for
hour long inpatient and outpatient consultations, but we are never given
a hard time about expenses or revenue! We take call from home on a pager
after an 8 hour day, usually get called once or twice or not at all.
The lactation program is a 10 year dream come true for me! We
started August of 1997.
     Hope this info. helps you.
