Oh how I wish I'd had Lactnet years ago.... I recently came across my notes
from an old counseling case(yes this is real!) and was curious to know what
you brilliant minds would have recommended- I believe there are still some
issues that are pertinent today.
A mother called- frantic! Her 2 1/2 year old has the "worst case" of Crohn's
disease the doctors have ever seen. They have admitted him to the hospital
and ordered mom to discontinue breastfeeding. This is not the first time he
has told her to stop. She has sought alternative therapy for the child- a
macrobiotic diet. The physician has told the mother that she is
"uncooperative, complains too much and is paranoid" and has restricted
visitation in the hospital, he has also alleged sexual abuse and contacted
Child Protective Services to investigate the case while the mother's visits
are restricted. The child is extremely upset by the separation from the
mother and this has intensified mother's agitation and anger and has
increased the allegations of an unnatural relationship between mother and
child. There are some allegations of physical abuse that the mother
believes were fabricated to add credence to the allegations of sexual abuse.
In the mean time- the baby is sick and miserable, wants to nurse. What do
you suggest?
