I think this is a good avenue to explore, but just a word of warning on using
pics -- it is just as hard to get pictures which are accessible and meaningful
to a majority of women / users as it is to write text. There are issues of
clarity of presentation, issues of avoiding things which are offensive /
shocking (and so are barriers to info going in) and issues of making the
depiction seem relevant to that particular user
I think there needs to be a lot of exploration of what is acceptable to
*everyone*. I bet most women who have not given birth find the graphic
depiction of breasts in the literature we like pretty off-putting. *I* don't
like some of the full breast stuff (it makes it look so clinical and unlike my
experiental memories of eary feeding) -- even when this is making it clear how
to position/attach the baby -- and as for the cut-away inside of the ducts
picture, it makes *me* think of knives carving into breasts.
What needs to happen is a good partnership between those who know about
promotion of breastfeeding and those who know about adult learning and
education. And then, designs need to be piloted in a systematic way -- maybe
with a variety of pilot groups.
