It's not an old wives tale, it's true.  I know a mom who clipped her
daughter's this way after she could not find someone in her area of the UK
who would clip without general anasthesia.  She got more and more perturbed
and looked at her fingernail which had just scraped the baby's skin and
then decided to try it.  It worked.

My own son's was clipped by the pedi who just told me it needed to be done
and did it after rubbing some anasthetic on it.  He used what was either a
knife/scalpel type instrument or tiny scissors, can't remember which.

I'm really tired of docs who wouldn't CONSIDER doing a clipping without
general anasthesia but endorse/perform circs.  I'm not going to get into
the no-circ/circ debate I'm just trying to point out how incredibly
hypocritical it is.  and of course, the answer always is "oh why cause all
that pain, why don't you just bottlefeed if it's that bad".
