Cindy,

Reason for the 6 month rules is sparcity of literature in
the MEDICAL literature. I would use a nipple shield until
frenulum can be clipped. It will make it easier for baby to
latch and help heal mom's nipples. I saw an article
regarding this in the Medela Rental Roundup and have had
success in my very limited use of this approach.

I have seen dramatic results in ability to feed in several
babies whose frenulums were clipped during the first week or
two of life. The earlier the clipping, the better the
results. We had a baby who was totally unable to breastfeed
due to the frenulum extending to the tip of the tongue. By
the time the baby was 2-3 hours of age, the frenulum had
been clipped. The baby immediately went to breast and
nursed very well. This baby had no more problems nursing
during the hospital stay.

You may quote me if it will help you.
