I had a ten day old infant in my practice 5-6 yrs ago who was not stooling
and then refused to eat. This is not normal behavior for a neonate. I
referred back to pedi and baby was diagnosed with Hirschsprungs disease.
Surgery performed immediately to unblock bowel.
Based on this experience, I disagree with the writer who said that this
condition is not a prob. for the nursing infant under 6 mo. This baby's
refusal to feed was because there was no where for the waste to go ad the
blockage was complete.
