I believe from reading Valerie Fildes' book, "Breasts, Bottles and
Babies" that dry nursing refers to infants not being breastfed, even if
breastmilk was available. Basicly, I believe it means that an infant
was fed as Valerie Fildes says, "by hand." We tend to believe that
artificial feeding began in the late 18th, 19th century but feeding
vessels for infants have been found in infant graves from 4000BC
onwards.
Her book is a fascinating, eye-opening look at the history of infant
feeding. Valerie W. McClain, IBCLC
