Kathy: In order to clarify my paraphrasing of Dr. Newman. I don't
necessarily fully agree with Jack's 10 minute rule, but it does make a
point. I personally think nursing is way more that nutrition, so I would
NEVER limit the time at the breast. Clearly, if a baby is neurologically
challenged or the mom has anatomical issues or there are problems being
worked through, this doesn't apply. Sorry for misleading or being
insensitive to anyone. I remember thinking that 10 minutes was a
ridiculously short time when Jack first posted this (or maybe I heard him
say it at a conference). However, once I regularly started applying his
breast compression techniques with a large number of moms, I realized it
does apply to healthy, full term babies without any of the aforementioned
issues.
