Yes, it is perfectly safe to have a mamo while lactating.  It is unsafe
not to, especially when you have a positive family history.  You do need
an above average radiologist to read the films accurately though.  Send
her to the best/largest women's center around.

It is difficult to do self exams while lactating, but not impossible.  I
would suggest that she do them on the first and the 15th of each month,
both before and after a feed.  This will keep her familiar with her
"normal" lumps and bumps" that a change will be apparent to her.

You should confirm the following observations with a breast doctor, but
it is my understanding that lumps that turn out to be a problem tend to
be fixed in place as though they were anchored rather than easily moved
around with pressure.  Also, with the ones we examined back in school,
the problem ones felt almost like a piece of gravel rather than the
rounded, cystic shaped ones that were just normal glands etc.
