Susan Sontag's short book ILLNESS AS METAPHOR is not a new book, but it is
still the classic statement on how and why societies turn illnesses (like TB
in the 19th century, and CA and HIV in the 20th) into statements about
character.
Certainly examining our own stress (or anger) is always a worthwhile thing to
do, and perhaps when we are ill and especially need all of our ducks in order
it is especially urgent. But categorizing illness and especially the ill
this way has historically had a lot of ugly corrollaries.
