Hi Sandy,
I don't think there is any "hard" data on this.
See, eg:
Amir L, Lawlor-Smith L. Thrush in the ducts? (letter) Medical Journal of
Australia 1991; 155:853.
Amir LH, Garland SM, Dennerstein L, Farish SJ. Candida albicans: is it
associated with nipple pain in lactating women? Gynecologic and Obstetric
Investigation 1996; 41: 30-34.
Amir LH, Donath S. Breast-feeding, pain and infection (letter). Gynecologic
and Obstetric Investigation 1999; 48: 145.
We really don't know the answers to your questions and a lot more research
is needed.
