I had heard of a case where a mom was sent home from a hospital using a
feeding tube (one used for gavage feedings in the NICU) taped to the breast
or for finger feeding. It was working o.k. but when a home visit was done by
IBCLC (the one who shared this situation with me), an ulcer was found on the
palate. I don't know how long the tubing was in use. The tips of these tubes
are not soft and flexible as the tips are on the devices made for this
purposes.
  When in the hospital, I have used the soft, flexible IV tubing that comes
on a "butterfly" IV set. I just cut off the needle and you have a good tubing
and it has a connector for a syringe. I have used this in "one-time"
situations or to give the mother an idea what using a SNS would be like.
