Some excellent suggestions can be found in Dr. Sears' "The Baby Book."
One of my favorites is to fill an empty ice cube try with a variety of
dips such as yogurt, peanut butter, cottege cheese, applesauce or any
fruit sauce and provide "dippers" like crackers, bread sticks, or fruit
pieces. Of course, be mindful of allergies, etc.

This dipping meal takes advantage of the toddler's natural tendency to
"dip" things. Who knows, the toddler might even *eat* something.

The mother can also mix breastmilk into mashed potatoes, or some sort of
cereal or even freeze breastmilk into cubes and gradually add some sort
of mixer, like chucks of banana and make a "smoothie." Or, the toddler
can be encouaged to eat soft bits of fruit, cheese, or veggies using a
novel approach, like chopsticks!

I would ask the mother if the toddler truly eats *nothing* as this may
indiate a problem. It's pretty rare for toddlers not to want to
experience food, especially mom's.

Research has shown that most todders do eat little bits here and there,
but not enough to satisfy some mothers' standards. Also, healthy,
normal, toddlers will pick out a perfectly balanced menu over the course
of a week if they are given the opportunity and choice to pick out their
food, without nagging by mother. But they may only eat cheese on one
day, and crackers the next and apples the next and so on . . .

This is a common ocurrance for toddlers and could be the beginning of a
classic power struggle and may just be the way the toddler is expressing
his autonomy and independence.

Keep us posted!
