Hello Netters, I was 'shadowing' and LC yesterday in the NICU and have a
question for you all. There's a baby who is still being NG tube fed,
born at 29 weeks, his mom is pumping for him altho "stuff" is added to
the breastmilk, and he has many complications so will be there at least
another month.
The problem: His mom has a history of systemic thrush, and two weeks
ago it began to get more than mildly symptomatic. Her physician first
gave her Monostat 7 (yeech) which of course did not much of anything.
When she discussed this with the LC, they were able to contact a dif. MD
and get Diflucan, 100mg for 2 weeks. Question now is, when would her
milk be safe to give to the baby? Baby already has evidence of yeast in
diaper area and is being treated topically. They threw out all the
stored milk she had given them, since they were unsure how long ago is
began to be contaminated... After 3 days there is usually an
improvement in symptoms on Diflucan, but does that mean the milk is
safe? Can't they just treat the milk (sterilize) that she is pumping
now? I'm very concerned that this already very fragile baby will now
have his gut insulted with FORMULA.
What's your cummulative experience? Reply directly to
