Carol,
Though your case definitely has some unusual organic twists to compound the
issues, I would be *highly* suspicious that this mom is doing Ezzo and just
not telling you! The obsession with making baby wait for feeds, longer naps
inspite of the evidence, lack of compliance with the care plan, and most
especially her insistence that SHE feed baby his solids rather than letting
him self-feed (that's Babywise 2, for all who are not initiated).
Consider asking her outright, Carol. Ezzo families are often coached not to
tell anyone who might not be supportive of what they are doing. I could be
wrong, but there are lots of red flags in your story. Saddest part of all
about your story: if this mom doesn't change her approach to her baby, there
could be even more trouble coming her way. We are now aware of several cases
of older babies beginning to refuse to feed once solids and "high chair
manners" have been instituted. The battle over who feeds baby and how baby
must behave apparently is causing some babies to shut down and even become
FTT (obviously for emotional reasons), to the point that a couple have
required tube feeding. If this baby is already doing so poorly, I shudder to
think what could happen next with an over-controlling parent at the helm.
Sadly,
Lisa Marasco, BA, IBCLC
