I agree Carol - telling mothers they should be discreet is just another
rule. Just bf however you and your baby feel comfortable, and everyone
else can go....do the other thing.
I have had some interesting discussions in class about this. It seems clear
to me that even the most invisible sort of bf can seem indiscreet to some
people - and something that also bothers people is frequency. They say
things like 'we were with my sister-in-law and she was hauling 'em out
every five minutes'; and 'every time the baby made a fuss, there she was,
lifting up her tee shirt again'. These are people just getting used to the
idea of bf, and it's a useful way to introduce the idea that their reponses
may be subjective and personal - and not necessarily shared by the mother.
There is always someone in the class who will express different feelings.
If there isn't, I do it : )
Having said all that, there was a sweet story on another list from a mother
whose baby had just been Christened. One of the (young male) guests wanted
to drop a kiss on the 'sleeping' baby's head as he said goodbye - and
nearly fainted when he got up close and personal and found his mouth pretty
close to mummy's bosom : ) Everyone laughed, but he was rather taken
aback!
