Dear Lactnetters:
After reading the reactions to the various news postings on the dangers of
co-sleep, I am moved to write. My local newspaper reported that there are 24
deaths per year related to co-sleeping in parent's bed. Now, I think any
number is a tragedy but every posting on Lactnet has a different number of
recorded deaths. I am certain I quoted my local paper accurately as I am
sure everyone else has. Just what is the correct number?
Also, has this study come from the US or some other country where co-sleeping
more accepted? I would also like to ask these same researchers, "How many
babies die each year worldwide from ingesting ABM? Or even the US?"
Some people are very comfortable sleeping w/ their children (the kids and I
love it; he doesn't) but care must be taken when a very small infant is in
the adult bed. I suggest to parents that they must do what their lifestyle
permits them and remind them that babies don't know they are supposed to
sleep in their own little room. Our culture has taught us that babies
shouldn't be w/ their mothers.
Enough preaching for now.
