< When baby latches she often
will "roll" her upper lip area while sucking and this really hurts mom.
Her
top lip is also rolled under during this time, when we try to flip it
out,
she lets go.We take baby off and reposition and sometimes she does it and
sometimes she does not. I have never had a baby do this before. It is
hard
to describe...... wondering what suggestion you may have? any help wold
be
appreciated.>
Cindy,
Have you looked at the attachment (frenum???) of the baby's upper lip to
the outside of the upper gums? Maybe also look at the lower? Perhaps this
is a situation somewhat similar to tongue-tie in that clipping might
allow the baby to flange the lip outward freely.
Logic suggests to me that many of the mouth muscles may be ennervated by
the same nerve branches. Perhaps they might therefore be interconnected
in their reflex response. If a physical problem keeps one from working
in a physiologic manner, it may be difficult not to mimic it with a
corresponding muscle.
I just tried to curl my upper lip and flange my lower. It took LOTS of
focused concentration and was very difficult to do. In fact, I couldn't
do it completely, and there was total tension in the attempt. It was much
easier to curl both at the same time, or flange both at the same time.
Just a thought.
Jean
