I would like to know, what other hopitals, particularly outside the
US and Canada, practices are with respect to administration of
intramuscular vitamin K and antibiotic eye ointment or drops to the
newborn. In both the US and Canada, the "party line" is that both
substances MUST be administered within the first hour of life. I am
concerned that when we do so PRIOR to the first breastfeeding
session, this may affect the newborn's ability to successfully nurse
in the delivery room. There is no data (at least I am not awarare of
any) that scientifically backs up this practice of almost immediately
"pouncing" on the neonate. What is the "party line" in other
countries? Do any of you have more liberal (official) policies with
respect to the amount of time which these procedures can be delayed.

Also, if anyone is aware of any data which support or do not support
our practice in North America.

One may respond on Lactnet or e-mail me privately.

Thanks,
