The only way to fix this kind of physician ordering is to give them the research
that shows how inappropriate what they are doing is, and how it hinders long
range lactation outcomes. If the baby has an IV, why not let the breastfeeding
take off on it's own...baby can't get dehydrated!
If they insist on 10cc every three hours....how about pre and post weights and
supplement at breast with SNS.
I am excited about the recent article in JOGNN "Transitioning Preterm Infants
With NG tube Supplementation: Increased Liklihood of Breastfeeding" By
Kliethermes et al. I shows clear correlations between avoidance of bottles and
sustained breastfeeding. Believe me, it will be posted where my Docs can see it!
