And of course, in the US, a "dummy" is a not very nice word for someone who
isn't very bright.  Generally used when children are being rather obnoxious,
as in "you big dummy you!"  So, the though of being used as a "dummy" is
rather non-appealing.

There is always, of course, the ventriloquist's dummy -- the most famous of
them all being Charlie, Edgar Bergen's dummy who is now in the Smithsonian.

On that note, who would want to put a dummy in one's mouth?  I'd much rather
have mom....

And I really liked whomever said "which came first, mummies or dummies?"
