"Is it really fair to know that longer storage times are
acceptable, and not tell the moms so they can make their own decision?"

Excellent point, Kirsten! Those storage times, at the recommended
temperatures, are research-based. Telling moms shorter (or longer, for that
matter) times because of what we're "comfortable with" comes perilously
close to, for example, nurses telling moms to only nurse 5"/side in the
first week because that's what *they* are comfortable with! Or any of the
other great stuff we complain about so frequently here.

And by the way, what exactly goes wrong with "old" milk? Stuff grows in it,
right? But does the stuff that grows cause harm, or is it just yucky? I
never actually thought to wonder about this all that closely before.

Cathy Bargar RN IBCLC Ithaca NY, where it is an absolutely glorious day, and
anyone with an ounce of sense would be outside enjoying it instead of
loitering at the computer.
