I read with interest the ABM's hypoglycemia protocol, but noticed that they
advise checking babies that are LGA (large for gestational age). Our
standing orders used to call for checking babies over 4000gm (8lbs.
13oz.--not all that big!), but I was successful in getting that changed,
mostly with the help of the WHO information. The WHO site does not consider
LGA babies who are NOT infants of diabetic mothers to be at risk. Their
information on hypoglycemia can be found at
http://www.who.int/chd/publications/imci/bf/hypoglyc/hypoclyc.htm. It's
quite long, but the part about screening LGA babies is about 1/2 way through
it.
