Just received a facimilie copy of the Merck's 1899 Manual. This was
obviously the text of the day. Thought I would share some of the
breastfeeding related info with you.
Galactagogues: Acid: Lactic, Castor Oil: topically, Extract Malt, Galega,
Jaborandil, Pilocarpine Hydrochlor., Potassium Chlorate.
Mastitis: Aconite, Ammonium Chloride: as a lotion locally, Arnica,
Belladonna, locally as liniment or ointment, Breast-pump, Calcium Sulphide,
internally if abscess is forming,Camphor, Chloral Hydrate Poultice, Conium,
Digitalis Indusion: locally as fomentation, Friction: with oil, Galvanism,
Hyoscyamus as plaster to relieve painful distention from milk, Ice, Ichthyol
topically: one of the best remedies. Iodine, Jaborandil, Mercury & Morphine
Oleate: locally in mammary abscess, Phytolacca: to arrest local
inflammation, Plaster to support and compress mammae, Postaaium Bromide,
Salines, Stramonium, fresh leaves as poultice, Tatar Emetic: in small doses
frequently repeated at commencement, Tabacco leaves: as poultice.
From the Foods & Dietetic Products section:
Peptogenic Milk Powder _ "for modifying cow's milk to yield a food for
infants, which, in physiological, chemical and physical properties, is
almost identical with mothers milk."
Just some of the recommendations for nipples:Acid, Boric or Carbolic, Acid
Sulphurious, Alchol, locally Cocaine Soloution, India Rubber, Lead nitrate.
They do mention Nestle product in their book too.
Wonder if these wise men had ever even seen a baby breastfeeding?
