Hi Dr. Shaw:
Hooray for your response to Dr. Carey's advice! Love his references to
"habit" and "demands" when talking about a 9 week old! I'm sure I'm not the
first to suggest doing articles by James J McKenna, PhD. He's done a lot of
work on the topic of sleep, co-parent sleeping, and SIDS. He co-authored a
chapter in Bfg: Biocultural Perspectives, Kathy Dettwyler's book, about
this--some good "back-up" refs for your letter.
Better advice from Dr. Carey might have included asking why the mother isn't
sleeping when the infant is sleeping with her? Maybe if she moved the baby to
the crook of her arm, baby would be in approved supine position and mom
wouldn't have to worry about rolling on the baby. Also, could there be
another underlying medical or emotional issue for the infant that is being
overlooked?
BTW, isn't Dr. Wm Carey the author of some lay/consumer baby book?
