Cathy asks,
<< (And can anyone tell me why Australia/NZ are so prominent in BF
info? And why those Australian women have so much milk?) >>
I was born in 19xx -- many, many years ago (remember, I am legally allowed to
wear purple.) My mother's attempts to breastfeed me were according to the
pediatric rules of the times -- one breast only, every 4 hours on the dot.
She was in the hospital 10 days...she quit attempting to breastfeed on about
day 14 as I obligingly screamed with hunger for 2 hours out of the four.
Lots of cereal and formula fixed that quickly -- she could stuff enough down
at one sitting that it held for the obligatory 4 hours. Fast forward 3.5
years. We had been missionaries in China, but the communists came, so all
American missionaries were evacuated. My parents decided to go to Australia
where my dad did evangelistic work, and we traveled all over -- Brisbane,
Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, Tasmania....Australia is where my mother learned
about breastfeeding...so that when we came home to the US, my younger sister
was breastfed for 6 months, my brother for 9 months, and my youngest sister
for a year (and yes, she is the smartest one of us all). There was something
really surreal about being invited to be a speaker at the first ALCA
conference in Canberra -- talking about breastfeeding -- in the very country
that had taught my mother HOW to breastfeed properly.
As to why Australian women have so much milk? As many of you well know, I'm
convinced it is because of Vegemite. (Thanks to Maureen Minchin and Ros
Escott for providing me with my needed 'fix' when we were at the ILCA
conference.) BTW, when I was speaking at the WIC conference in AZ, another
woman, totally independent of me, said the same thing -- so I'm not the only
one to think that Vegemite might just play a role in increased milk supply!!
