Liz,
There is only speculation in the medical literature that pregnancy and
breastfeeding increases hearing loss in otosclerosis. One of my clients
has this condition, so I did a lit search for her. The speculation is
that estrogen increases the fusion of the bones of the inner ear. This
explanation does not make much sense, as prolactin from frequent
breastfeeding reduces a woman's estrogen production.
My client was diagnosed during her second pregnancy, after having
breastfed her first child about 2 years. She had noticeable losses in
hearing during her pregnancies, and decided to breastfeed her subsequent
babies about a year, and just have fewer children than she had planned.
She will decide whether or not to have surgery when she is done
childbearing. For now she is coping with bilateral hearing aids.
There was also an LC from Italy that posted on lactnet about a case of
otosclerosis. You could check the archives and see if she has any
further information.
