I received a call from a mom today. She has a six week old baby girl and
breastfeeding is going very well. Due to respiratory distress at birth baby
did not get to start breastfeeding until she was 3 days old. During that time
baby did not receive any supplementation. Mom dutifully pumped every two
hours and got 4 - 6 oz each time right from the start (she said the nurses
were amazed by the quantities she was producing). Now all of this precious
colostrum is in her freezer and mom is wondering what to do with it. She is
pumping a little because her husband wants to be able to give their daughter
a bottle. Would it be ok to periodically thaw some of the colostrum and mix
it with the pumped milk for feedings? Mom feels badly that her baby never got
the colostrum. Ideas? Comments?
